Sump, Skimmer, Weir

SUMP

A sump is a pond designed to hold water for a period of time while sediment particles sink to the bottom. This allows water to flow while keeping harmful particles out of wetlands. The below picture shows two of the sumps located on Pond 70.

SKIMMER

A skimmer is a metal fence-type object designed to let water flow under it while catching as much trash as possible and preventing the trash from entering the ponds.

WEIR

A weir is usually a concrete box with a metal grate on the top. It is designed to catch overflow water from the streets and hold the water to prevent flooding of the streets.

If you come in the north entrance on Oak Grove Boulevard, you will see a weir on the left hand side at Pond 30.
